How To Stay Motivated In Swimming

Whilst swimming is a unique sport that has very few similarities with other sports, swimmers who train for hours everyday, all day long, tend to lose some motivation. This is completely normal! Here are some ways to help you maintain your motivation.

Set Goals

You can’t talk about motivation without talking about goals! Goals will help you to stay on track and to keep doing your workouts. Don’t set difficult goals to reach, many people start with goals too big, or too small, or that aren’t specific enough.

Set SMART goals; Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and trackable. Not only do you want to have a long-term goal, but you will also need shorter term SMART goals to help you get there. This will help you to reach your long-term goal, step by step!

If you feel you are still not seeing progress, check in with your coach who can help you adjust your smaller goals to help you achieve your long-term goal.

Focus

No one should swim without focus. Entering the pool with set goals and desire to swim, you will need to focus on what it will take to fulfil those goals! The only boring practice is when you don’t know the purpose of the practice, so go in with a set goal in mind to help you achieve the goals you wish to reach!

Challenge Yourself

Staying within your comfort zone can also become very boring. Each day, try to challenge yourself within practice. It is more rewarding and more motivating than being able to say that you have done something for the first time, or done something better than you have before!

Link Up With Friends and Teammates

Swimming with friends and teammates can help to motivate you! They will help you to push yourself to reach your goals and will be a support group, all celebrating your achievements together!

Reward Yourself

Despite how small you may feel your achievements are, it is important to celebrate them! Remember, they’re all steps to your bigger goal and each step should be celebrated!

Have Fun

We know this is a cliche answer, but if you are having fun in the water, it will help to motivate you to push yourself out of your comfort zone and help you to achieve your swimming goals!
